- Three-time All-American miler, Conger won the national championship in 1927
- Added three Missouri Valley titles in the mile from 1925-27
- Represented the United States in the 1,500 (a race in which he held the American record) at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam
- Ran against Paavo Nurmi, the international superstar from Finland, in the 1929 Wanamaker Mile and beat him
- Defeated rival Lloyd Hahn in a 1928Â race, setting a world record in the 1,000 yards.
