- After finishing second at the 1966 NCAA Indoor Meet, Carson made the top of the medal stand as a senior in 1967
- Runner-up in the 440-yard dash at the 1967 NCAA Outdoor Championship, his time of 46.0 seconds stood as the school record for 16 seasons
- Won the 1967 U.S. Track & Field Federation national title in the 600, finishing ahead of Olympic champion Lee Evans
- Carson’s daughter, Kim, was a NCAA Champion (100 hurdles) at the 1996 indoor and outdoor meet for LSU
