AMES, Iowa - Kantrail Horton scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, Marcus Fizer sparked Iowa State to an early 12-1 lead and the Cyclones never trailed in beating Iowa 79-66 Saturday night.
In a game of bumping, gritty defense, Iowa State (7-2) built a 13-point halftime lead, fought through early foul trouble in the second half and turned back Iowa (5-4) every time the Hawkeyes threatened.
Fizer finished with 16 points, including six in Iowa State's early run, Michael Nurse and Paul Shirley each had 12 and Martin Rancik scored 11.
Shirley also played outstanding defense on Iowa's leading scorer, Jacob Jaacks. He prevented Jaacks from getting the ball in the low post and Jaacks' only points came on a 3-pointer early in the second half. He had been averaging 16.1 points per game.
Dean Oliver led Iowa with 21 points. Kyle Galloway and Rob Griffin each scored 12.
Iowa clawed back at the start of the second half with an 11-1 run and trailed 38-35 after Galloway's jumper with 15:24 left. Iowa State's starting point guard, Jamaal Tinsley, was then on the bench after picking up his fourth foul, but the Cyclones were responded.
Fizer, who had been scoreless for 11 minutes, hit an 18-footer, Stevie Johnson fed Shirley for a shot along the baseline and Fizer followed up his own miss to make it 44-35.
Ryan Luehrsmann's 3-pointer drew Iowa to 46-40 with 10:58 to play, but the Hawkeyes would get no closer. Horton hit a 3-pointer, Johnson passed to Shirley for a dunk and Nurse nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key for a 54-42 lead.
Horton made a nifty reverse layup on a baseline drive to put Iowa State up 61-48 with 4:46 and the Cyclones closed it out by making 16 of 18 free throws.
