DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Luke McDonald scored 14 of his 27 points during a key eight-minute stretch in the second half, leading Drake to a 72-58 victory over Iowa State on Saturday night.
Drake (5-3) bounced back from an 101-59 loss at No. 15 Iowa on Wednesday to hand Iowa State (5-6) its third straight loss, the longest losing streak for the Cyclones since they lost four in a row in the 1998-99 season.
It was Drake's biggest margin against Iowa State since a 72-56 victory on Dec. 19, 1981.
McDonald hit five 3-pointers after scoring only nine points at Iowa. He had 11 in the first 6:12 against Iowa State, then took over after Shane Power scored to draw Iowa State to 50-49 with 8:35 left.
First he hit a leaning shot, then made a deep 3-pointer from the top of the key to stretch the lead to 55-49. His basket on a baseline drive made it 61-51 and he answered Power's 3-pointer with a driving shot for a 63-54 lead with 3:01 remaining.
The Bulldogs then wrapped it up by making free throws and the crowd, seeing that the victory was assured, saluted the team with a standing ovation with 39.1 seconds left.
David Newman added 11 points for Drake, which shot 59 percent (13-of-22) in the second half. Power's 22 points led Iowa State. Tyray Pearson, the Cyclones' leading scorer with a 18.7 average, scored only 10 and eight came in the first seven minutes.
Jake Sullivan, Iowa State's best outside shooter, was held to seven.
Iowa State led 27-20 late in the first half when Sullivan hit a jumper off the dribble. But the Cyclones missed their final seven shots of the half and Drake cut the lead to 30-28 at halftime even though McDonald was on the bench after getting his second foul.
Sparked by Newman's 3-pointer, Drake started the second half with a 9-2 run to take a 37-32 lead and never trailed again.
