AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team followed Friday's 2-1 victory over Oklahoma State with a 2-1 double-overtime triumph over Oklahoma Sunday. With the win, the Cyclones square their overall record at 5-5-1 and their conference record at 2-2. Oklahoma falls to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12.
For the third time in four games, ISU took a 1-0 first half lead. Just under nine minutes into the game, Nikki Gamble lofted a cross that hung up in the strong northwest wind and was ultimately put away by freshman forward Amy Flores. The goal was Flores' first as a Cyclone. Oklahoma and Iowa State both fired four shots in the first half.
Oklahoma found more opportunities on the offensive end in the second half. The Sooners took 11 shots to the Cyclones' two. ISU goalkeeper Karen Hasselman recorded five of her seven saves in the second period. Oklahoma broke through in the 68th minute when freshman Jenny Jones headed a corner kick to freshman Heidi Kohlbacher, who put it away for the score.
The score remained tied until four minutes into the second overtime period. After an Oklahoma foul, Iowa State defender Erin Weldon took a free kick from 25 yards out. Weldon lofted the ball toward the goal, and Oklahoma goalkeeper Catherine Wade knocked it away. The Sooners could not clear the ball, and Cyclone midfielder Kelly Burke knocked in the loose ball.
"Before the second overtime, I asked the team who was going to win this game," ISU coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "I didn't tell them they were going to win; I made them tell me."
Coming into the weekend, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State were tied for first in the Big 12 with 2-0 records. ISU evened its record in the conference aftter losses to Texas and Texas A&M in the opening weekend of conference play.
"Last week was tough, playing Texas and Texas A&M," Hornbacher said. "These wins are big in our conference. There is a lot of parity in the Big 12, and we have to prepare for and battle our opponents one at a time."
Dating back to 1999, the last four Iowa State-Oklahoma matchups have gone into overtime, with the last three going to a second extra period. Iowa State improves its all-time record to 5-1-1 against Oklahoma, which includes a 4-0 advantage in Ames. The Cyclones' sweep over the two Oklahoma schools is the second in school history, with the first coming in 1998.
With their fifth victory in 2002, the Cyclones have equalled their win total from 2001. Nikki Gamble recorded her third assist of the season Sunday, which is more than any ISU player had last season. Amy Flores became the sixth different Cyclone to score a goal in 2002.
