IOWA CITY, Iowa - Jackson Vroman, playing the final 13:51 with four fouls, converted a three-point play with 19.8 seconds left to break the final tie as Iowa State beat Iowa 73-69 Friday night.
Iowa State (6-1) rallied from a 12-point deficit in the second half to win in Iowa City for just the fifth time in 28 games. The Cyclones used a 14-2 run to get back in it, then got key plays down the stretch from Vroman, who scored 11 of his 13 points after getting that fourth foul.
Iowa (6-2) tied it for the last time at 69 when Glen Worley sank two free throws with 40.9 seconds remaining. Iowa State's Tim Barnes then dribbled around the perimeter, chased by Jeff Horner, until firing a pass to Vroman under the basket.
Vroman made the layup as he was fouled by Jared Reiner, then sank the free throw to make it 72-69. Reiner ran the ball down after teammate Brody Boyd missed a 3-point shot, but threw it away and Iowa had to foul Marcus Jefferson.
Iowa State coach Larry Eustachy leaped into the air after the foul was called and Jefferson sank a free throw for the final point.
Jake Sullivan led Iowa State with a season-high 25 points, including a pair of free throws that gave the Cyclones a 69-67 lead with 1:09 to play. Freshman Adam Haluska scored 12 points and Barnes finished with eight assists and eight points.
Worley led Iowa with 19 points and Chauncey Leslie scored 13, all but two in the first half.
Iowa led 50-38 after Sean Sonderleiter's three-point play with 15:54 left. Haluska then hit a 3-pointer to start Iowa State's big run, which Sullivan finished with a 3 to tie the score at 52.
Iowa moved ahead 60-54, but the Cyclones charged back again, taking a 62-60 lead when Vroman caught a pass from Haluska on his hip and made a layup.
