AMES, Iowa - Roy Williams caught a touchdown pass and set up two other scores with big plays, including a pass of his own, as No. 20 Texas bounced back from its blowout loss to Oklahoma with a 40-19 victory over Iowa State on Saturday.
Vince Young threw a touchdown pass in his first start for the Longhorns (5-2, 2-1 Big 12), Cedric Benson ran for 140 yards and three TDs and Texas played inspired defense. One week after being run over by Oklahoma 65-13, the Longhorns recorded five sacks and held Iowa State (2-5, 0-3) to 45 yards in building a 27-0 halftime lead.
Texas coach Mack Brown is 6-0 in the games right after Oklahoma. Iowa State has lost five straight for the first time since dropping its final five games in 1999.
Williams, who holds most Texas receiving records, caught a 46-yard pass from Young on a crossing pattern to set up the first Texas touchdown, a 6-yard run by Benson on the opening series.
Early in the second quarter, Williams took a pitchout from Young on what looked to be an end around. But he stopped and threw to B.J. Johnson, who was 10 yards behind the defense. Johnson had to wait for the ball and was tackled at the Iowa State 13 after a 56-yard gain.
Two plays later, Benson burst through a huge hole on an 8-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 and the Longhorns kept rolling from there.
Benson, who also scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter, carried 32 times in his second 100-yard game of the season and the 11th of his career.
Young was 12-of-16 for 156 yards with one interception and a 13-yard touchdown pass to B.J. Johnson. He had a TD pass called back by a holding penalty and added 58 yards rushing in 10 carries. Johnson finished with seven catches for 187 yards, matching his career high in yardage.
Chance Mock, who started the first six games at quarterback for Texas, played two series in the first half and much of the fourth quarter. He threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Williams with 7:07 left and finished 6-of-9 for 131 yards.
Iowa State coach Dan McCarney gave Cris Love his first start at quarterback because the Cyclones had been struggling with redshirt freshman Austin Flynn. But Love couldn't get anything going, either.
The Cyclones managed only 26 yards on their first 21 plays and had just four first downs in the opening half. Iowa State was so inept that at halftime, Williams had more passing yards (56) than Love (49). Love, unable to avoid the Texas rush, had only one more completion in the half (six) than Texas had sacks.
Flynn, more nimble than Love, took over in the second half and gave the Cyclones a spark. His running set up a 51-yard field goal by Tony Yelk and his 47-yard pass to Lance Young led to Lane Danielsen's 2-yard touchdown run on an end around.
Danielsen also caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Flynn, who twice ran for 2-point conversions. Iowa State finished with 277 yards. Texas had a season-high 578.
