LUBBOCK, Texas - Three different Cyclones scored goals as the Iowa State soccer team topped Texas Tech 3-0 on the road Friday. Iowa State (5-8-3, 2-5-1 Big 12) remains in a tie for eighth in the Big 12 conference with the win. Texas Tech falls to 2-12-1 overall and 1-7 in conference play. Iowa State earned its second road victory of the season and its first conference road win since a 3-2 win at Texas Tech on Oct. 20, 2000.
Iowa State used a 9-3 edge in shots in the first half to create some scoring chances. The Cyclones cashed in when Kristina Baumann scored with 12 minutes remaining in the half. Baumann collected her 10th career goal, moving her into a tie for ninth place on the ISU career goals list.
"Kristina Baumann wanted to get a lot of shots on goal and just kept battling for the first goal," ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "She came up with the game-winning goal in the first half."
The Cyclones extended the lead in the first five minutes of the second half. Sophomore midfielder Deb Benakis scored her third goal of the season at the 49:19 mark, assisted by Baumann and Kate Kirwan. Later in the half, sophomore forward Amy Flores knocked in a cross from Kirwan to give the Cyclones a three-goal advantage.
"We created some opportunities in the second half, more than in the first half," Hornbacher said. "Offensively, Deb Benakis and Jess Villhauer created a lot in the midfield."
Iowa State finished with a 17-7 overall edge in shots, led by Baumann's four attempts. Villhauer and Kirwan added three each. Kirwan's 17 points this season ranks ninth on the ISU single-season points chart.
Cyclone goalkeeper Beth Chapman recorded two saves en route to her 10th career shutout, which breaks the all-time Iowa State career shutout record previously held by Lynley Hilligoss. Chapman collected her 18th career win, closing to within one victory of Hilligoss' school record. As a team, the Cyclones held their fourth straight opponent scoreless in the second half.
With three points against Texas Tech Friday, Kristina Baumann has a total of nine career points against the Red Raiders. Iowa State moves to 7-1 overall against Texas Tech, and the Cyclones have won the last seven contests.
Iowa State plays its final road game of the regular season, facing Baylor on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m.
