BOULDER, Colo. - Early and late goals by Colorado's Katie Griffin made the difference as the Iowa State soccer team fell 2-0 at Colorado Sunday. The loss drops the Cyclones to 3-4-2 (0-2 Big 12) and below .500 for the first time this season. The victory is the eighth straight for the 17th-ranked Buffaloes, who are tied for the lead in the Big 12 Conference with a 2-0 record.
Griffin got Colorado on the board early, scoring her fifth goal of the season at the 8:17 mark. Kathryn Grandinetti assisted on the play. Colorado managed just one more shot on goal the rest of the half, while Iowa State registered none in the opening period.
In the second half, the Buffaloes continued on the attack, taking 12 shots. ISU goalkeeper Beth Chapman was up to the challenge, making six saves in the second half. Colorado managed to break through late, as Griffin scored off another Grandinetti assist with just over four minutes remaining.
Colorado finished with an 18-5 edge in shots, led by Jen Thais and Griffin with five each. Iowa City native Jess Villhauer took two shots for Iowa State. The Cyclones were held without a goal for the second time this season and the first in the last six games.
ISU's Chapman played all 90 minutes in the contest and surpassed the 4,000-minute mark for her career, the only Cyclone goalkeeper ever to reach that milestone. She collected seven saves on the day, moving to within five of the 200-save plateau for her career.
Iowa State returns home to host Oklahoma on Friday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. in the first-ever night game at the ISU Soccer Complex.
