COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The No. 16 Iowa State gymnastics team opened the 2004 season with a win against No. 25 Missouri, 196.300-195.530. Iowa State's score marks the highest ever recorded at a season opener. ISU's record improves to 1-0 overall and 1-0 Big 12 Coference action.
Cyclone sophomore Laura-Kay Powell placed first in the all-around competition with a 39.375 after tying for second on vault (9.850), placing fourth on uneven bars (9.825), tying for sixth on balance beam (9.800) and for third on floor exercise (9.900)
Sophomore Erin Dethloff placed third in the all-around competition with a 39.075 after setting two career-highs on vault and floor exercise with scores of 9.900 and 9.950, respectively. Dethloff also tied for first on uneven bars with a 9.925 and placed 10th on balance beam (9.300).
Cyclone teammates Janet Anson and Jade Kvach took fourth (38.475) and sixth (37.900) place in the all-around competition, respectively.
Iowa State's Chee Chee Calina placed second on beam after tying her career-high score of 9.950. Missouri's Lauren Schwartzman took first place in the event by scoring a perfect 10.0.
Cyclone Abigail Richey was unable to participate due to a knee injury.
ISU will next travel to Iowa State on Jan. 17 to compete against the Hawkeyes at 7 p.m. at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
