UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The No. 9 Iowa State gymnastics team closed the 2004 season with a third place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Gymnastics Championship at Penn State Saturday evening (196.150).
Iowa State finished less than three-tenths shy of qualifying for the NCAA National Championship as a team, but three Cyclones will advance to the NCAA National Championships individually.
Sophomore Erin Dethloff placed fourth in the all-around competition to qualify for the NCAA National Championships for the second year in a row as an all-around competitor. Dethloff also scored a 9.925 on the balance beam to claim second place in the event.
Fellow sophomore Laura-Kay Powell will make her first appearance at the national championships after qualifying with a first-place finish on floor (9.90).
Janet Anson will be the third Iowa State freshman to represent the team at the national competition after making a 39.20 in the all-around and finishing in a tie for seventh.
This marks Iowa State's sixth consecutive year being represented at the NCAA National Championships by either a team or individual.
Lou Ball was named the 2004 North Central Assistant Coach of the Year. This is the second time he has received the award. Ball was graced with the honor for the first time in 2002.
The top two teams from each of six regions advance to the national championships, along with the top two all-around competitors from each region and any event winners that aren't on a qualifying team.
The No. 4 Georgia Gym Dogs were named the Northeast Regional Champions with a team score of 197.525. No. 19 Michigan took second (196.375), Penn State claimed fourth (196.075), No. 16 Missouri finished fifth (194.40) and in sixth was New Hampshire (196.125).
Dethloff, Powell and Anson will travel to Los Angeles to compete in the NCAA Championships April 14-16.
