AMES, Iowa - In a physical match that saw 30 fouls and two yellow cards, conference rivals Iowa State and Missouri battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie at the ISU Soccer Complex on Friday. ISU moved to 6-3-3 on the year with the tie.
"We created several chances tonight and continued to execute our game plan," Iowa State head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "We need to eliminate our small mistakes and continue to create opportunities to attack. If we can do that we'll get results that don't result in a tie."
The Cyclones got on the board first in the 54th minute as sophomore Stephanie Kaphingst took the ball from the back-right of the box and crossed to a streaking Amy Flores who headed the ball into the upper-left corner of the net. Flores' goal was her fourth of the season and the 16th of her career, moving her into fourth place on the ISU all-time list. The assist was Kaphingst's first of the season.
Missouri had several near misses midway through the second half, including an Ashley Hamblin cross that was booted just before it hit the end line to a wide-open teammate. The ball was cleared as Cyclone defender Amanda Purple streaked in and headed it away.
The Tigers knotted the score at one apiece with 13 minutes left in regulation as Hamblin broke away from the ISU defense on the left side and beat Cyclone goalkeeper Joanna Haig and directed the ball into the right side of the net. Hamblin, a freshman and recent Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School graduate, netted the second goal of her young career on the play. Both of Hamblin's goals have come in her home state of Iowa, as she netted a goal in MU's 5-0 win at Iowa back on Sept. 11,

Missouri out-shot ISU 21-13 for the game and 7-2 in the extra frames but the Cyclone defense and Haig thwarted every Tiger chance in overtime. Haig, an Inver Grove Heights, Minn., native, picked up a game-high six saves on the evening.
"Jo Haig played outstanding defensively and made some big saves for us," Hornbacher said. "We new Missouri would come in here aggressive and she really stepped up."
The Cyclones will hit the field again Friday, taking on the Kansas Jayhawks at 1 p.m. at the ISU Soccer Complex.
