AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team fell to the Indiana Hoosiers, 1-0 on a balmy Sunday afternoon at the ISU soccer complex. Indiana controlled most of the physical match, out-shooting the Cyclones 13-4 and committing 19 fouls to ISU's 13.
The Hoosiers finally got on the board for the first time this season at the 37 minute-mark. Freshman midfielder Molly Beckwith dribbled up the left side alone after a beautiful pass from freshman Molly Krueger, forcing ISU goalkeeper Joanna Haig to come out and contest her. Beckwith then blasted the ball over Haig's right shoulder into the corner of the net for the goal.
"We didn't play with the intensity today like we did on Friday night in our win with Purdue," Iowa State head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "We didn't play a full 90 minutes. We just need to learn from this, move forward and focus on another Big Ten opponent in Iowa on Wednesday."
Iowa State had a golden opportunity to strike first in the opening minutes of the game, but IU's Lauren Fabbro gobbled up freshman Meghan Smith's shot from just inside the top of the box.
"If that shot can go in right away, it changes everything," Hornbacher said. "We needed to build off that quick opportunity and that just didn't happen today."
The Cyclones had another great look in the second half to tie the game at the 51 minute-mark as the speedy Smith separated from a crowd of Hoosiers on a breakaway. Her shot from just inside was partially blocked by Fabbro, then trickled past her, slowly rolling towards the goal. Fabbro was able to chase the ball down and kick it away inches before it crossed the line.
Indiana out-shot ISU 7-1 in the first period and shutout an opponent for the second time this season. The first came in a 0-0 tie at Loyola Marymount in their season-opener. Fabbro recorded the seventh shutout of her career.
