CORVALLIS, Ore. - Seven-time All-American Janet Anson, making her second-consecutive appearance at the NCAA Individual Event Finals, tied for third on floor and tied for fourth on vault on Saturday at Gill Coliseum on the campus of Oregon State University. The junior is the first two-time qualifier and place-winner in Cyclone history.
Anson, who was national runner up on vault a year ago, led off with a Yurchenko full twist and hit, scoring a 9.875 in a vault she used up until the Missouri meet (Feb. 3). The Kansas City, Mo., native then took a slight hop on a Yurchenko one-and-a-half full twist, which was scored a 9.775. The two vault scores were then averaged again giving her a final score of 9.825.
Anson had the highest score through the first four vaulters before UCLA's Kate Richardson notched a 9.831 to take the lead. Nebraska's Emily Parsons also posted a 9.825 as the final competitor in the first flight. Anson and Parsons remained tied for second place until Alabama's Ashley Miles (9.938) and UCLA's Kristina Comforte (9.963) knocked Anson out of the top three. On the vault, gymnasts were given two vaults in the individual finals and they were scored by six judges. The high and low scores were dropped and the middle four were averaged.
"Overall I felt I had a great performance, even though I had a little hop on the landing" Anson said. "Its great to see so many people come out and support all the individuals. It was fun to compete with some of the best gymnasts in the country and I hope to come back next year and compete for another title."
After staying loose for a little over an hour, Anson went as the final competitor on the floor exercise. The junior turned in one of the most beautiful routines of the night, scoring a 9.9125 to tie for third with Alabama's Miles and Tabitha Yim of Stanford. Anson hit three almost perfect tumbling passes, including a full-twisting double back on her first pass. On pass No. 2, she completed a two-and-one-half twist punch front and finished with a dynamic whip-half punch front one-and-a-half.
"It felt great to compete in the floor finals for the first time this season because I really made it a goal of mine coming into this year," I hope to be back here next year competing again for a national title."
Anson's finish on floor was the highest in school history. Teammate Laura-Kay Powell took eighth in the finals a year ago.
