AMES, Iowa?A pair of Texas Tech goals off crosses unraveled the Iowa State soccer team's hopes of tasting triumph Friday, with the Red Raiders winning 2-0.
Texas Tech's first goal came in the run of play at the 58:28 mark when Taylor Lytle crossed from the right wing into a crowd of players in front of goal. The cross resulted in the Cyclones redirecting the ball into their own net. The Red Raiders doubled their advantage in the 67th minute when Lytle served in a cross via a corner kick that Sarabeth Clopton redirected into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

Despite not finding the back of the net, Iowa State (5-9-1, 0-5-1 Big 12) had several opportunities, as the Cyclones held a 21-13 shot advantage. Whether it was shots off the cross bar or quality chances that ISU drove at Texas Tech goalkeeper Tina Rincon, the Cyclones could not convert on any of their nine shots on goal.
“We had great opportunities to get in and just did not score,” ISU coach Wendy Dillinger said. “How many times did we shoot the ball directly at the goalkeeper? You have to put the ball in the net, that's all it comes down to.”
After a shaky start, which saw Texas Tech (8-6-1, 3-5-0 Big 12) force ISU to save the ball off the goal line in the opening two minutes, the Cyclones dominated the first half. Iowa State outshot the Red Raiders 15-7 in the opening frame, highlighted by a shot off the crossbar by junior midfielder Elise Reid who gave the Red Raider defense fits all night. Reid paced the Cyclones with six shots including four on frame. Senior forward Leslie Hill had a season-high tying five shots in the contest.
“We outshoot them 15-7 in the first half and the bottom line is those two goals in the second half shouldn't have been an issue because we should have been up three or four at the half,” Dillinger said.
Iowa State split time in goal. Junior Ann Gleason played the first half, making one save. Sophomore Ashley Costanzo took over for the final 45 minutes and registered a pair of saves.
The Cyclones are back in action Sunday when 15th-ranked Colorado visits Ames for a 1 p.m. clash at the ISU Soccer Complex.
