AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State fell to No. 11 Stanford, 195.800-194.550, at Hilton Coliseum Sunday afternoon. The Cyclones put together their best team score of the season and a season-best on the floor as well.
Jennifer Salfen earned the “Marie-Rae Sopper Outstanding Performance Award” for the Cyclones, which goes to the ISU gymnast whose performance inspires and captivates the Cyclone coaches, teammates and fans. She earned the award after scoring a 9.850 on vault.
“It's encouraging,” ISU coach Jay Ronayne said. “If a couple things happened we would have been able to score a 195 and that's right where we want to be. There were a lot of things we did right.”
Iowa State fell behind after the first rotation, as Stanford posted a 49.300 on bars while the Cyclones earned a 48.575 on vault. Salfen's career best of 9.850 led the Cyclones, while Nikki Dilbert added a 9.800. For Stanford, Allyse Ishino and Tabitha Yim earned a score of 9.900 on bars.
Stanford increased its lead in the second rotation, going up 98.250-97.250. Iowa State scored a 48.675 on bars, while Stanford put together a score of 48.950 on vault. Jasmine Thompson earned a career-high 9.875, while Dilbert tied her best output with a 9.850. Ceilia Maccani also set a career best with a 9.825. Three members of the Cardinal scored 9.800 on vault.
At the end of the third rotation Stanford led 146.950-145.650. The Cyclones tallied a score of 48.400 on beam, while the Cardinal recorded a 48.700 on floor. Thompson led ISU with a 9.825 and Dilbert tied her career-best with a 9.775. Maccani set a career-high with a 9.775. On floor, Yim scored a 9.900 to lead Stanford.
The final rotation saw the Cyclones set a season-best on floor with their score of 48.900. Dilbert set a career-high of 9.900, while Thompson and Sweetin added 9.850s. Melanie Tham added a 9.800 to help the Cyclones.
Dilbert came away with her second consecutive all-around championship, earning a score of 39.325. Thompson finished second with a score of 38.500.
The Cyclones will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 17, when they travel to face Oklahoma.
