AMES, Iowa - No. 18 Oklahoma State racked up 473 yards of total offense, including 206 yards rushing and three touchdowns from back Keith Toston, in its 34-8 victory over Iowa State Saturday afternoon in Jack Trice Stadium.
The ISU rushing offense, which was leading the Big 12 entering the game, mustered a season-low 54 yards on the ground. The loss drops ISU to 5-5 overall and 2-4 in Big 12 play, while OSU improves to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the league.
OSU went into the break with a 13-0 lead. The Cyclone defense kept ISU in the game, holding the Cowboys to two early field goals while falling behind 6-0 in the first quarter.
OSU scored its first touchdown to go up 13-0 with 9:50 left before intermission on a 14-play, 98-yard drive. Cowboy quarterback Zac Robinson picked up the blitz and found Tracy Moore wide open in the corner of the end zone for a 10-yard scoring pass.
That was the end of the scoring for both teams in the opening period. The ISU offense marched across mid-field just twice in the first half, generating 93 yards of total offense. OSU had 194 yards of offense at the break.
A pair of third-quarter Cowboy touchdowns put the game out of reach at 27-0. The Cowboys scored on their opening drive of the second half with a 2-yard rush by Toston. It appeared the Cyclones had stopped the Cowboys on their series, but a costly personal foul kept the drive alive, and four plays later Toston scored with 10:58 left in the third.
Toston scored again after another three-and-out by ISU, this time from 17 yards out to make it 27-0 OSU. The Cyclones put together one of their best drives of the day late in the third quarter, going 45 yards primarily through the air. However, the drive was halted when an Austen Arnaud pass was intercepted in the end zone by Terrance Anderson.
ISU got its first score with 11:50 left in the game on a 7-play, 85-yard drive that was capped off by a swing pass from Arnaud to Alexander Robinson that went for 45 yards. It was Robinson's team-high eighth touchdown of the season. ISU made it 27-8 when Arnaud lobbed a pass to Marquis Hamilton for the two-point conversion.
OSU countered with another touchdown to increase its lead to 34-8. The key play was a 69-yard run by Toston to the ISU 2-yard line on a 3rd-and-2 situation. Toston scored on a 1-yard run two plays later.
Robinson's 51 yards on the ground gives him 2,032 yards in his career and 864 yards on the season. Jesse Smith cracked double-digits in tackles for the seventh-straight game with 10 stops.
The ISU seniors will play their final home game next weekend (Nov. 14) vs. Colorado at 1 p.m.
