ISU got off to a fast start by establishing Craig Brackins on the offensive end. The Cyclone big man recorded 12 of ISU's first 16 points to give ISU a 16-6 advantage with 11:43 left in the first half. Brackins was 5-of-6 from the floor in the early going.
The lead ballooned to 28 points (34-6) with just under four minutes remaining in the first half, as the Cyclones staged a 21-0 run while the Buffs were mired in an 8:40-minute scoring drought. Brackins, Charles Boozer, Lucca Staiger and Bryan Petersen all hit treys in the Cyclone rally.
Dwight Thorne finally ended the CU cold spell with a basket at the 3:20 mark, but Staiger answered on the other end with a long-range bomb to give the Cyclones a 37-8 lead with just under three minutes remaining before intermission.
ISU went into the break with a 37-9 lead, breaking the Big 12 and school mark in the modern era (since 1950) for lowest points allowed in a half. Brackins nearly doubled the Buffs half total with 17 points. CU made just 4-of-23 shots (17.4 percent) in the opening period.
The lead reached 33 points at 42-9 after Brackins scored the first five points of the half for the Cyclones. The Buffs cut the deficit to 30 points (44-14), but ISU increased the lead to 50-16 after Jamie Vanderbeken drained a 3-pointer.
ISU held a 61-28 lead with under seven minutes left before clearing its bench.
The 28-point margin of the victory ties for the seventh-best in ISU history vs. a conference opponent and the largest margin of victory in a conference game in the Greg McDermott era.
ISU travels to Oklahoma State on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
