CHARLESTON, Ill.?The Iowa State soccer team outshot Eastern Illinois 27-6 Friday evening at Lakeside Soccer Field, but the Cyclones ended up tying 1-1 in double overtime with the Panthers.
Iowa State (3-0-3) had nine shots on goal to Eastern Illinois' four, and the Cyclones held a 7-0 corner kick edge. The match saw Iowa State go into overtime for the third time this season, with each one ending in a draw.
ISU head coach Wendy Dillinger felt the game was much closer than the statistics illustrated.
“We started hot the first five minutes out of the gate,” Dillinger said. “After Eastern Illinois scored it had a lot more energy and was winning a lot of the 50-50 balls. They had several good opportunities and really pressured us defensively.”
Iowa State got off to a fast start, firing a pair of shots in the first two minutes. The Cyclones were rewarded for their quality start when sophomore Mary Kate McLaughlin headed in her first goal of the season a mere 2:34 into the match. Senior Casey Bothwell was credited with the assist, her second of the season. The quick goal marked the third consecutive match ISU scored in the opening four minutes.
“Mary Kate McLaughlin played out of her mind,” Dillinger said. “She scored a good goal off a corner kick and did a great job defensively.”
Eastern Illinois (2-2-2) leveled the match at the 12:19 mark on the Panthers' first shot of the game. Rachel Hamilton scored her first goal of the season for Eastern Illinois, while Kristin Germann notched the assist on the equalizer.
The score remained 1-1 at the end of the first half. Iowa State was the clear statistical leader, holding a 13-4 shots advantage and a 6-3 shots-on-goal edge. The Cyclones also had a 3-0 corner kick lead.
Despite ISU outshooting EIU 22-6 at the end of regulation, the score line stayed at 1-1. Iowa State also held an 8-4 shots-on-goal edge and had seven corners to the Panthers' none.
Dillinger said the Cyclones had opportunities to win at the end of regulation.
“We had chances at the end of the second half and just couldn't score,” Dillinger said. “Jordan Bishop had the goalie beat and hit the crossbar.”
Senior goalkeeper Ann Gleason played the full 110 minutes for the Cyclones and made three saves. Gleason recorded the tie to send her season mark to 3-0-3, as she has played every minute in goal for ISU this campaign.
The Cyclones stay in Illinois for their next contest. Iowa State travels to Macomb, Ill., to face Western Illinois on Sunday in a 1 p.m. match.
