CEDAR FALLS, Iowa ? No. 2 Iowa State fell to top-seeded Iowa 19-12 in the finals of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Sunday evening in the UNI Dome. The team runner-up finish is the best performance by the Cyclones since winning the event in 2000. Iowa State finished third in last year's National Duals. ISU posted a 3-1 record in the tournament this weekend, and stands at 6-2 in duals this season.
The Cyclones won four of the 10 contested weights against Iowa.
“We are going to keep working,” ISU head coach Kevin Jackson said. “We are going to be fine. In March, we are going to be at our best. We've got to finalize a couple positions and situations, but we are continuing to get better.”
Eleventh-ranked Cyclone Jerome Ward had Iowa 184-pounder Phillip Keddy's number once again. The Iowa State sophomore came through in overtime to drop the sixth-ranked Hawkeye by decision, 7-5. Ward outlasted the Hawkeye senior at the Dec. 6 dual by a score of 5-3.
ISU 133-pounder Nick Fanthorpe notched a decision over Nate Moore of Iowa by a score of 8-3. The Naperville, Ill., native recorded three takedowns in the bout.
The Cyclones ended the dual with consecutive decisions at 197 pounds and heavyweight. Top-ranked Jake Varner (197) controlled Iowa's Luke Lofthouse en route to a 7-1 victory. Varner stayed undefeated at 17-0 overall this season. ISU teammate David Zabriskie followed with a 4-1 win over Jordan Johnson of Iowa.
The gap between ISU's Andrew Long and Matt McDonough of Iowa remains a small one. The Cyclone fell by a 9-8 decision to the Hawkeye. Iowa Stater Jon Reader fell in similar fashion to archrival Ryan Morningstar of Iowa. The Hawkeye outlasted ISU's two-time All-American to win by decision, 5-4.
ISU sophomore Andrew Sorenson (157) fell in overtime to Iowa's Aaron Janssen, 3-1 (SV).
The second-ranked Cyclones are back home in Hilton Coliseum Jan. 16 for a dual with Illinois. Action begins at 7 p.m.
