Christopherson Powers Iowa State Over Iowa, 75-72

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Scott Christopherson led all scorers with 30 points, including a three-point dagger in the final minute, as Iowa State defeated Iowa 75-72 Friday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa State (8-2) garnered its first win in Iowa City since 2002, and became the first road team to claim victory in the series since 2003.

After trailing 40-31 at halftime, ISU came out of the break strong, scoring the first eight points to quickly pull within one. The contest turned into a see-saw affair over the next several minutes, with neither team able to extend a lead beyond three points.

Christopherson, whose 30 points are a new career high, put the Cyclones on his back midway through the second half. Christopherson scored 13 of ISU's 17 points during a stretch that saw Iowa State extend its lead from 51-50 to 68-58 with just over three and a half minutes to play.

Iowa State raced out to a 12-4 lead in the first five minutes, as all five Cyclone starters tallied baskets. Iowa (5-5) responded with an 11-0 run of its own, taking a 15-12 advantage. After the hot start, the Cyclones had difficulty on the offensive end, making only two of their next 15 attempts.

The Cyclones also battled early foul trouble, as Jamie Vanderbeken picked up two quick fouls and only logged eight minutes of first-half action. Jordan Railey was whistled for three fouls in four minutes of play.

ISU trimmed the Iowa lead to one (25-24) thanks to three-pointers by Christopherson and Anderson. However, the Hawkeyes held Iowa State at arm's length the rest of the first half, and a buzzer-beating layup extended the margin to nine at intermission.

Iowa State has a quick turnaround, as the Cyclones play host to Texas Southern Sunday evening. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
