COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Iowa State soccer team closed out its 2011 season in top form with a 1-0 win over Missouri Friday at the Walton Soccer Field. Sophomore Emily Goldstein scored the match's lone goal at the 60:48 mark, her second tally this season.
Goldstein's goal came from a shot outside the penalty area from the right side that fooled Missouri goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein.
"Emily has a wicked shot, and at halftime we told her to use it more," Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. "The one she hit for a goal curved at the last moment and ended up in the back of the net. Emily deserved it, as she had a great second half and was very dynamic in the attack."
With the shutout, Iowa State tied the all-time program record for clean slates in a season with nine. The Cyclones also had nine shutouts in 1999. Iowa State closes this season with the most wins in a campaign since 2005 when the Cyclones won 11 and advanced to the NCAA tournament.
"The defense was very solid tonight," Dillinger said. "We had a game plan on how we wanted to shut down Missouri, and we executed it tonight. (Missouri) had some good looks, but we prevented them from doing what they wanted."
Iowa State goalkeeper Maddie Jobe played the full 90 minutes in goal and recorded a career-high-tying 11 saves in the shutout win. Jobe's season mark improved to 6-3-1. The Eden Prairie, Minn., recorded seven shutouts in 2011, good enough to tie for the second most in a season in program history. Jobe now has 11 shutouts in her career, putting her alone for second in Cyclone history. Ann Gleason boasts 16 career shutouts, the Iowa State high.
"Maddie came up huge for us five or six times tonight," Dillinger said. "Emily Goldstein and Emily Hejlik both had big saves too as they saved a ball off the line."
Iowa State's win over Missouri was its second consecutive. Last season, the Cyclones thumped the then-Big-12-defending-champion Tigers 5-0 to conclude the 2010 campaign. Iowa State ends this season winning three of its final four matches, with two coming against league foes.
"We showed a lot of character tonight," Dillinger said. "We were upset with how poorly we played against Kansas, and we were hurt when we learned before kickoff tonight that we wouldn't advance to the Big 12 tournament. We challenged the team to only worry about what we can control before kickoff and they really responded and battled. I was very proud with our effort and character tonight."
Missouri (12-7/3-5 Big 12) outshot Iowa State (9-9-1/2-6 Big 12) 24-16. The Tigers also had an 8-2 edge on corner kicks.
Caitlin Graboski led the Cyclones with a team-high four shots, a career best. Goldstein and Jennifer Dominguez both chipped in with three shots on the night.
The match was the final one in the careers of seniors Emily Hejlik, Mary Kate McLaughlin, Amanda Cacciatore and Amanda Mayberry.
"They all were leaders and have played large roles in helping move our program in the right direction," Dillinger said. "Their encouraging attitudes and the hard work they put in every day was very important. Everything they brought to us has helped us get on the right track. We were very blessed to have them in the program the past four years."
