BOSTON, Mass. - The Iowa State wrestling team opened its season in Boston, Mass., Sunday in the Nor'Easter Duals at Boston University. Despite two pins by the No. 24/27 Cyclones and an overtime victory with less than four seconds to go, Iowa State fell to Army 23-22 in its first dual of the season. Army (2-0) then went on to upset No. 26/27 Boston with a 28-9 victory.
Down early, Iowa State nearly pulled off a comeback but the Terriers (1-1) held on for a 21-16 victory and the Cyclones dropped to 0-2 on the season.
Two major highlights in the Cyclones' match against Boston were redshirt freshman Mikey England's upset of No. 5 Hunter Meys on a 4-3 decision and Boaz Beard's technical fall victory to give the Cyclones a 17-15 lead heading into the final two matches.
Three Cyclones bring home a 2-0 record from Boston. Redshirt freshman Ryak Finch (125) defeated Army's David White by an 8-1 decision and Boston's Bubba McGinley with an 11-2 major decision. Cyclone captain Andrew Sorenson won his match against the Black Knight 165-pounder with a pin and earned a 5-2 decision over Terrier grappler Kyle Czarnecki. 184-pounder Beard posted major decisions over both opponents at the Nor'Easter Duals.
After's Finch's victory over White, the Black Knights stole the next four matches and earned a 19-3 lead before No. 8/7 Andrew Sorenson took the mat at 165 pounds. Sorenson pinned sophomore Alex Smith with 1:38 left in the second period to give Iowa State a mid-match spark.
The Cyclones came up just short of a comeback with victories in the final three matches against Army. Beard's 19-5 major decision put Iowa State just 10 points down with two matches to remaining. A huge first-period pin by redshirt sophomore Cole Shafer at 194 pounds gave Iowa State a chance heading into the final match. The Heber City, Utah native moved up to 194 pounds after losing a wrestle-off to teammate Beard Oct. 28.
Redshirt sophomore Tyler Christensen finished out the battle against Army with a 3-1 decision over Stephen Snyder. Tied 1-1 with 3.5 seconds in overtime, Christensen got two points to secure the heavyweight victory.
After Army defeated both Boston and Iowa State, the two went head to head in search of their first dual victory of the season. The Cyclones jumped to a 4-0 lead with Finch's 11-2 major decision over McGinley in the first match. Quick escapes to begin the second and third periods gave Finch an 8-2 edge early in the final period.
Sophomore Trent Weatherman held onto a 5-1 lead to earn the decision over Neston Taffur at 149 pounds, lessening the Terrier lead to 9-7 after three matches. Boston's 141-pounder Peter Ishiguro and 157-pounder Nick Tourville each won by injury default over Cyclones Max Mayfield and Michael Moreno. After five matches, Boston had a 15-7 edge.
Sorenson's win was followed by England's upset of fifth-ranked Meys. After losing by major decision to Army's Collin Wittmeyer just hours prior, England came out on top after trailing 3-1 heading into the final period. The Centerville, Iowa native began the third period with an escape, followed by a takedown for the 4-3 lead, which he held onto for the remainder of the match. England's decision over Meys closed the gap on the Terrier lead 15-12.
After Beard's victory over Alex Najjar and Shafer's loss to Hall at 197 pounds, Boston led 18-16 heading into the final match. Heavyweights Kevin Innis and Tyler Christensen were knotted 0-0 after the first period, but in the second Boston's Innis pulled away after an escape and a quick takedown for a 3-0 lead. An escape by Christensen with nine seconds left in the second and again with 1:30 left in the third period closed the gap 3-2, but Innis hung on and secured the Terrier win.
