FINAL MIDLANDS BRACKETS
EVANSTON, Ill. - Iowa State finished eighth overall at the 2011 Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., Friday. The Cyclones placed five wrestlers in the prestigious tournament, including a third-place winner and two fifth-place finishers.

Kevin Jackson said. "We must improve technically in must-win positions and do a better job of taking advantage of scoring opportunities."
Two reversals and a late takedown sealed a third-place spot on the podium for heavyweight
Matt Gibson. Halfway through the second period Gibson posted a reversal against the 10th seed Mike McMullan of Northwestern to take a 4-2 lead. Gibson continued to wrestle until the final tick on the clock and posted a takedown with just 18 seconds remaining to seal the 9-4 decision.
Entering the tournament unseeded, redshirt freshman
Luke Goettl finished sixth overall with two major upsets during his tournament run. Goettl scored 10 points against Bebeto Yewah of Wisconsin-LaCrosse in the fifth-place final, but was ousted by the 11th seed in a 17-10 decision to claim sixth place.
"Our young guys showed fans their potential in this tournament," Jackson said.
True freshman
Tanner Weatherman wrestled unattached for the Cyclones and garnered a fifth-place title with a takedown in the sudden-victory round.
"Coming into the tournament I knew I just wanted to wrestle and have fun," Weatherman said. "It was a fun tournament and I learned a lot."
Weatherman posted a takedown to take the lead with 20 seconds left, but after an escape by Luke Rynish of Wisconsin-Parkside the two were sent into suddent victory. Another takedown by Weatherman in the sudden victory period gave the Huxley, Iowa native a 9-7 victory over the tournament's ninth seed.
"It was about training hard, using technique and when it came down to it I ended up getting the last takedown," Weatherman said of his final match.
Fourth-ranked
Andrew Sorenson ended his tournament on a strong note with a 7-6 decision over tenth-seeded Bubby Graham of Oklahoma. Sorenson got a takedown with 17 seconds remaining in the match to take the lead and secure the victory over the nation's 18th-ranked grappler.
Mikey England's placed eighth Friday afternoon after falling to Jimmy Sheptock of Maryland in a 10-3 decision.
The Cyclones travel to Tempe, Ariz., Jan. 3 to take on Arizona State in a dual meet. The meet is set to begin at 8 p.m. (CST).
