Cyclones Fall to Fourth-Ranked Gophers

MINNEAPOLIS - Cyclone captain Andrew Sorenson extended his perfect start this season with a 6-4 decision over Minnesota's Cody Yohn Friday in Minneapolis, Minn. Iowa State fell 34-6 in Williams Arena Friday and slip to 0-7 in dual competition while the Gophers improve to 4-2.
Sorenson is 11-0 overall in his senior campaign for the Cyclones. The Woden, Iowa native posted two takedowns and two reversals in his victory over eighth-ranked Yohn.
Seventh-ranked Chris Spangler improves to 4-1 on this season after a 5-3 victory over Gopher grappler Logan Storley. Spangler notched two takedowns and an escape en route to improving his dual record to 4-1 this season.
Iowa State was forced to forfeit at 125 pounds after Ryak Finch suffered an injury prior to the match. The Gophers swept the first five matches and were up 23-0 midway through the meet.
Even after back-to-back victories at 165 pounds by Sorenson and 174 pounds by Spangler, the Cyclones weren't able to upset the No. 4 Gophers and fell in the final three matches.
At 141 pounds, Iowa State's Luke Goettl nearly upset No. 10 Nick Dardanes, but the Gopher wrestler held on for the victory in the final period despite a late comeback try by Goettl.
The Cyclones travel to Columbia, Mo., on Dec. 18 to face Missouri at noon (CST).
