LINCOLN, Neb.—The 21st-ranked Iowa State gymnastics team led No. 10 Nebraska after three rotations Sunday in the Devaney Center, but an impressive 49.450 floor score in the final rotation by the Cornhuskers pushed them past the Cyclones, 196.300-195.575.
Iowa State (7-5-2/1-3 Big 12) junior Michelle Browning won the all-around competition with a score of 39.225. Browning had been ill all morning, and it was questionable if she was going to compete at all Sunday.
“Other than us having to count a fall on beam I was very impressed the performance of the team,” Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. “We got a gutsy performance from Michelle Browning who was very ill all day and before the meet. We weren't even sure if she was going to be able to compete today until after warm-ups.”
Senior Jody McKellar set a new career high with a tally of 9.875 en route to winning the beam title. Freshman Camille Santerre-Gervais equaled her career high with a score of 9.900 on bars, good enough for a first-place tie on the apparatus.
The Cyclones' team tally of 195.575 was their highest tally away from Hilton Coliseum this season.
Iowa State also saw career-best efforts from Elizabeth Stranahan on floor with a 9.900, the highest floor score by a Cyclone this season. Senior Alex Grant's 9.750 on floor was her career high, while junior Celine Paulus posted a new personal best on bars (9.850). Shea Anderson also delivered a career-high-tying 9.850 on vault.
The Cyclones posted a season-best 48.900 on vault, led by Anderson's 9.850. Iowa State was just short of a season best on floor with its score of 49.100. The team posted 49.200 on floor against Iowa on Feb. 18.
Iowa State's next meet is Saturday, March 19 at 2 p.m. CST at the Big 12 Championships in Columbia, Mo., at the Hearnes Center.
