MINNEAPOLIS - The Iowa State gymnastics team kicked off the 2016 season at the University of Minnesota Saturday night. Iowa State earned a team score of 194.025 to place second in the meet after Minnesota, who earned 194.700. Freshman Meaghan Sievers had an impressive first meet, leading the team on two of the three events she competed in.
“Overall, I'm pleased with how they held their nerves in check, because it's the first meet of the year," head coach Jay Ronayne said. "There's a lot of things that are different than four months practicing in the gym. They held it together pretty well.
“Adrenaline was a factor for a couple of the athletes," Ronayne continued. "They had a lot of it and it's hard to control. But, that's something for them to learn right off the bad. I'm really looking forward to a good season, I think we're going to get a lot better.”
Floor Exercise
In the third rotation of the night, Iowa State put up a 48.625 on floor. Meaghan Sievers led the Cyclones with a 9.825. Haylee Young brought in the next highest score on the event with a 9.775. Briana Ledesma and Kelsey Paz contributed on the event with a 9.750 and 9.725, respectively, to help earn the Cyclones highest event score of the night.
Iowa State assistant coach Kristen Maloney:
“I think we did well. I'm pleased with how everyone did. Obviously we still have those two slots that need to clean up a little bit. But overall, I'm happy with how they did on floor.”
Vault
Freshman Meaghan Sievers earned the top score for Iowa State on vault, earning her second place at the meet. Her 9.850 lead Iowa State's efforts, followed by three 9.700's from Alex Marasco, Briana Ledesma, and Haylee Young. Kelsey Paz and Kelly Martin also competed, putting up 9.575's. The Cyclones team event score added up to 48.525.
Iowa State volunteer assistant coach Danielle Guider:
“I thought the girls did pretty good on vault. I was very pleased that they had two stuck landings, which is better than we had in our intersquad. So, we're getting better on stuck landings, but we could still have more control on our landings. Other than that, I though it was great overall.”
Uneven Bars
In the first rotation of the meet, four Cyclones earned scores of 9.700 or higher on the uneven bars to help reach a team score of 48.475. Hilary Green brought in the highest score from the anchor spot with a 9.825, followed by Briana Ledesma and Kelsey Paz who both recorded 9.725's. Sara Townsend and and Meghan Sievers also contributed, earning a 9.700 and 9.500, respectively. Kelly Martin showed promise for future competitions with a 9.600 in her exhibition routine.
Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne:
“With uneven bars being the first event of the meet, wasn't ideal. We started with a fall, which could rattle a team pretty badly, but they changed things. I think they handled it very well. So, I'm really happy with how they pulled it together. We will be a lot sharper than that, I think they were very nervous but they held it together.”
Balance Beam
Haylee Young and Alex Marasco both put up 9.800 on beam to lead the team on the event. Sydney Converse, Hilary Green, and Kelsey Paz all contributed on the event. Converse scored a 9.650, Green scored a 9.625, and Paz scored a 9.525. The team event score was 48.400 on beam.
Iowa State assistant coach Katie Minasola:
“I was very pleased with beam. The fact that we went up and we had a few mistakes happen on the other three events, and we went seven for seven. Can we do better? Yes, we can stick more landings, but I'm happy that they hit.”
Up Next
The Cyclones will be competing in the Ozone Collegiate Gymnastics Classic next Saturday. The meet will be in Knoxville, Tennessee on Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.
