AMES, Iowa - The No. 17 Iowa State gymnastics team (8-6, 1-2 Big 12) bested No. 25 Michigan State on Friday night, defeating the Spartans by a score of 196.225-194.175 at Hilton Coliseum. The performance extended Iowa State's streak of scores above 196 to five meets.
The Cyclones saw a great performance from Andrea Maldonado, who matched her floor career-high of 9.950 for the third time. Maddie Diab chipped in a 9.900 and Ana Palacios had her career-best floor routine, scoring a 9.875. The high-scoring efforts contributed to the Cyclone's best floor score since March 9, 2018.
"I love competing in Hilton," head coach Jay Ronayne said. "It felt foreign for the first part of the meet since we have not been here. By next week, it will feel like home again and I know we're going to be as sharp as we can be. The difference in this team is when the first event does not go as well, nobody is in their own pity world. They get back to the team and it becomes about everybody."
Floor Exercise
Iowa State had its second floor score at or above a 49.425 since 2006 by equaling the total on Friday. Andrea Maldonado tied her career high for a third time with a 9.950, winning the event outright. Maddie Diab closely followed with a 9.900, and Ana Palacios also earned a career high with a 9.875 after rejoining the lineup for the first time since January 20. Madelyn Langkamp and Sydney Converse rounded out the scoring quintet by earning a pair of 9.850s.
Junior Andrea Maldonado
"I think I could have done better because I slipped and it went down from there. I knew that it was not about what I did, it's about the team, so I tried to give it all on the floor. I am having fun and I am giving all that I can for my team. I can't wait to be back at Hilton."
Uneven Bars
The Cyclones tallied a 49.250 on bars. Casandra Diaz and Natalia Ros Vaquer matched each other for the event title with two 9.875s. Diaz tied her career high for the second time this season. Natalie Horowitz scored a 9.850 in her first competition of 2020. Laura Burns and Jade Vella-Wright both earned a 9.825 to round out the scoring team.
Junior Natalia Ros Vaquer
"I did not have the best bars routine, but the last week I did not practice at all. I am satisfied that I brought something to the team today."
Balance Beam
The Cyclones posted a score of 48.825 on beam. Sophia Steinmeyer led the pack with a score of 9.825. Close behind were Phoebe Turner and Meixi Semple both scoring 9.775s. Sydney Converse (9.750) and Ana Palacios (9.700) rounded out the Cyclone scorers.
Assistant Coach Kristin White
"We made some changes into the lineup today. We are trying to get our best team out there for championships season. I was proud of Jade for getting on the beam for the first time in three years. We have seen our team getting more and more confident every time they get up on the beam and that is what you want to see in your student-athletes."
Vault
Iowa State earned a 48.725 on vault. Makayla Maxwell led the team with 9.875, winning the event. Sydney Converse followed with a 9.800 while Phoebe Turner and Sophia Steinmeyer each posted 9.775s. Andrea Maldonado earned a 9.500 to finish out the scoring.
Head Coach Jay Ronayne
"The table was slippery and one of our athletes was slipping during touch warmups. It was not the way to start a meet. We have not done that this year, but we pulled it together."
Up Next
The Cyclones will be hosting the Iowa Hawkeyes as part of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series next Friday, March 6. The meet is set for 6:30 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.
