IOWA CITY, Iowa - Iowa State Swim & Dive finished day two of the Hawkeye Invite strong with ten top-20 finishes and five personal bests across eight events.
Carley Caughron and Winter Craig led off the day and earned spots in the 100 fly finals. Caughron and Craig finished back-to-back for 12th and 13th, respectively, in finals.Â
The 400 IM was dominated by Mallory Miller, making finals for the second time at the 2024 Hawkeye Invite, placing 14th and swimming to a personal record. Sophie Schmitz finished 23rd and retrieved her personal best. It marks the 17th best performance in the 400 IM in Iowa State history.
Megan Marquardt posted a personal best in the 200 free by almost two seconds (1:53.72), finishing 31st in a field with over 50 swimmers.
Freshman Grace Swoboda led the way for ISU in the 100 breast, notching her second personal best of the invite and earning a spot in the finals with her time of 1:02.37. She finished in 10th place. Anja Peck, also a rookie, qualified for finals and placed 21st overall.
Emma Kuhn advanced to finals in the 100 back, one of her best events. She placed 12th overall, putting up a time of 56.05. Lili Neisser (56.89) recorded her personal best in the 100 back and finished 28th in finals.
Head Coach of the Cyclones, Matt Leach was excited about performances the Cyclones put on throughout day two. "Along with some great swims individually, we had some strong relay performances with some of our seniors stepping up and delivering in the 200 med relay and in the 800 free relay," Leach said.
Three groups swam in the 200 medley relay and two placed in the top 20. Kuhn, Swoboda, Caughron, and Andie Quirke led the Cyclones to a top-10 finish with a time of 1:41.51.
The 800 freestyle relay included two quartets, both finishing in the top 20. Keirlyn Mullica, Marquardt, Miller and Corinne Guist, placed 17th overall.
Kate Mitchell qualified for finals for the second day in a row, finishing 14th with a score of 281.75 and qualifying for NCAA Zone Cuts Qualifiers in the 3-meter. Ally Blumenfeld earned points for the Cyclones while placing 19th (258.20) and Maggie Bendell followed in 24th (243.98).
"I felt like this session was a much stronger session for us with multiple lifetime bests and a few people gaining towards our top-10 all time performance list, " Leach said. "I'm excited to continue to excel tomorrow. Go Cyclones!"
The Cyclones are leading the UNI Panthers moving into day three by 28 points. The final day of competition will include the 1650 free, fly, back, breast, and platform diving. Prelims will begin at 10 a.m. with finals to follow at 5 p.m.
