MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the second consecutive season, Iowa State (4-9-4, 1-8-2 Big 12) ended its regular season in a draw, as it used a two-goal second half to tie Kansas State (7-6-5, 2-5-4 Big 12) on the road in each team's season finale Thursday evening.
The Wildcats struck first, scoring midway through the first stanza, and took a 1-nil lead into the break. K-State then struck again a little under midway through the second half to take a 2-0 lead. But a pair of unanswered second-half goals from the Cyclones would knot things up and take things to a draw. Of Iowa State's 20 goals on the year, 15 came in the second half of play.
Both Morgan Goodman and Taylor Spitzer scored for the Cyclones, as each recorded their fourth goal of the season. Gili Johnson would score her first point of the season, picking up an assist, while Ella Ciardullo picked up her team-high third assist of the year. Spitzer led the team in shots with four, while Ella Zimmerman had three, placing a team-best two on target. In net, Kasey Cannistraro went the distance, collecting four saves.
Both Rilyn Rintoul and Andra Mohler scored goals for the Wildcats on the night. Mohler scored first, cashing in on assists from Jayce Woodward and Rintoul. Rintoul then tallied her score in the second half, using feeds from Allison Marshall and Chloe Dillbick. Woodward and Rintoul had a Wildcat-high three shots, with Rintoul placing all three of her attempts on target. Between the pipes, Maddie Sibbing pulled down three saves while allowing a pair of goals.
The stats were pretty even on the night, with the Wildcats just edging the Cyclones in shots, 14-12. ISU held a slim advantage both in saves, 4-3, and corners, 6-4, while the Wildcats were definitely the more physically aggressive team, committing 22 fouls to ISU's 10.
How it Happened
K-State came out aggressive from the jump, committing four fouls in the first 15 minutes and attempting three shots, one of which was saved by Cannistraro.
The Cyclones saw their best attempt of the first 20 minutes come off the head of Ella Zimmerman from a corner set piece, but Sibbing handled it, and play continued.
The Wildcats broke the ice with a score in the 27th minute, as Mohler converted on feeds from both Woodward and Rintoul to put the Wildcats on top. ISU took two shots in the final 18 minutes of the first stanza but saw both saved as the teams would head into the break with K-State leading, 1-0.
The Wildcats had more shots (6-4), saves (3-1) and fouls (11-4) than ISU, but the teams were tied in corner kicks attempted with three apiece.
The Wildcats again were the aggressors early, as Woodward ripped a shot just three minutes into the second stanza, forcing Cannistraro to save it. Three more K-State shots would go by before Rintoul punched one in after a physical play in the box to put the Wildcats up, 2-0.
The Cyclones kept battling, though, and eventually broke through. A K-State foul just outside the box led to a free kick for the Cyclones. Goodman would take the freebie and bend one past the K-State wall into the right side of the net, past Sibbing, to cut the lead down to one.
The once aggressive Wildcats had just one shot in the next ten minutes, before the Cyclones equalized in the 78th minute off a wild carom. A cross from Johnson to Spitzer would be put off the right post but bounce right into the back of Sibbing and back into the net, tying things up.

The Cyclone defense continued to hold firm in the last 12 ticks, as K-State did not attempt another shot. ISU saw two more Spitzer shots just miss as it was unable to make it three-straight unanswered goals as the game would finish in a 2-2 draw.
