AMES, Iowa– No. 25 Iowa State (20-5, 10-4 Big 12) took down No. 16 TCU (18-9, 8-7 Big 12) in four sets Saturday, sealing Christy Johnson-Lynch's 400th-career win and the 11th 20-win season under her guidance. The victory is ISU's fourth over a top-25 opponent this season. Four is the most ranked wins by the Cyclones since the 2012 season.
Nayeli Ti'a took over the first with an errorless seven kills on 12 swings as the Cyclones opened with a 25-19 set win. Maya Duckworth then kept Iowa State rolling with seven kills in the second as ISU went up in the match 2-0 with a set score of 25-22. The Horned Frogs did not give up as they forced a forth by 25-20, but ISU responded taking the fourth 25-20.
Ti'a had a season-high 20, her first 20-kill match as a Cyclone, hitting at a clip of .280. It's the third 20-plus kill match of the junior's career. Ti'a once again came one dig short of a double-double with nine digs, also serving up an ace and putting up a block for the star performance.
Amiree Hendricks Walker put up a big performance of her own with an errorless eight kills at .500 hitting, while putting up five blocks and totaling three digs. Duckworth hit seven kills on the day, all in the second, to now total 1,042 on her career and enter the Iowa State top 10.
Rachel Van Gorp had save after save with a match-high 22 digs, her eighth 20-plus match this season and 10th of her young career. Morgan Brandt stuffed the stat sheet with 38 assists, 10 digs, three kills and two aces. Brandt now totals 30 double-doubles on her career.
SET ONE
Tierney Jackson put down two early kills to make it 3-3, and a successful ISU challenge came soon after to again tie things at 5s. Iowa State then set out on a scoring spree in a run of nine that included four kills by Ti'a and a libero kill by Van Gorp, causing ISU to go up 13-5 as TCU called its second timeout. Ti'a could not be stopped, tipping her sixth kill over on just 10 swings as the Cyclones put the score at 15-7. Hendricks-Walker broke up a TCU run of five with a kill (18-13), and put down another as ISU reached 20 (20-14). Ti'a had her seventh kill to make it set point Cyclones at 24-18, and ISU would take the set 25-19.
SET TWO
ISU took the first three after two kills and an ace. A kill by Abbi Brenizer, making her first-career start for the Cyclones, kept ISU up at 7-3. Ti'a would reach 10 kills at 17-12, and kept it rolling striking down another to put things at 18-14. The Horned Frogs brought themselves back within three at 19-16, but Duckworth followed with back-to-back kills, totaling six in the frame. After TCU took a run of three (21-19), Hendricks-Walker put an end to it with her sixth kill still hitting without an error, but the Horned Frogs again came back this time making it a one-point set as ISU called a timeout. Iowa State did not let the set slip away, sealing it 25-22 on yet another Ti'a kill.
SET THREE
Ti'a sent over kill No. 16 to make it 6-5, ISU and had No. 17 shortly after to tie things at 7s hitting at a clip of .500. TCU took the lead after but Iowa State kept up, tying the set 13-13 on Brandt's third setter kill. TCU held the 15-13 advantage at the media timeout, and following two ISU attack errors Iowa State called a timeout. The visitors hit 20 first with Iowa State holding 15 points, and ISU continued to fight making it 21-18 with TCU taking a timeout of its own. TCU kept control, forcing a fourth at 25-20.
SET FOUR
Iowa State began with a run of five, causing an early timeout by the visitors. TCU brought the lead within reach at 7-6, but Iowa State denied them the tie. ISU remained up as Duckworth and Hendricks-Walker put up a huge block (11-7), and Ti's 20th kill followed to make the scoreboard read 13-9. TCU scored three straight to again make it a one-point set (14-13) and went on to flip the lead at 16-15. The Cyclones flipped it again at 17-16 and Lilly Wachholz had two clutch kills and two blocks to follow, making it 23-17. Another Wachholz kill brought ISU to match point at 24-18, and Hendricks-Walker had the match-ender at 25-19 with a kill.
