Cyclones Wrap Tyson, Valentine Invite

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Iowa State women and No. 17 men closed out the Tyson and Valentine Invite with four top-10 ranked program performances.

The 800m runners put up big performances in the invite sections as Darius Kipyego led the Cyclones with 1:47.00 for fourth. Cyclone newcomers Dugion Blackman and Aman Thornton again improved their season bests as Blackman clocked 1:47.29, an indoor PR, and Thornton 1:47.34. Those times improve Blackman to seventh in ISU indoor history and Thornton to eighth.

Next came the women's invite 800m where freshman Becca Heitzig cut 1.72 seconds off her best time with 2:05.10, the ninth-fastest time at Tyson. That time puts her at No. 5 in Iowa State history.

Blake Veenstra made the shot put final and went on to finish seventh with a best mark of 60-9 1/4 (18.52m), recorded on his second of six attempts.

Women competed at the Valentine Invite in Boston and Bella Heikes made another improvement on her mile best time shaving seven seconds off with 4:39.34, debuting at No. 4 in Iowa State history. Heikes placed second in her heat and 34^th overall. A total of 13 women broke 4:30 in the elite field.

Maelle Porcher ran the 3,000m in the fastest heat, timing in at 9:07.54.

Two weeks of indoor regular season remain before Big 12 Indoor Championships, with Iowa State next taking on The Arkansas Qualifier and Iowa Open Friday, Feb. 21.
