AMES, Iowa – No. 14 Iowa State (10-4, 4-1 Big 12) closed out its home schedule with a top-15 dual victory over No. 15 Pittsburgh (9-5, 2-2 ACC), 23-14, Sunday afternoon inside Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones won six of 10 bouts, including three by bonus-point margin.
ISU won the takedown battle, 19-10.
Both squads wrestled several backups as they attempt to get healthy for the closing stretch of the season. All 10 wrestlers in Iowa State's shorthanded dual lineup were redshirt-sophomores or younger.
Sophomore Ethan Perryman got the Cyclones off to a hot start with 21-8 major decision over Colyn Limbert at 125 pounds. Perryman registered six takedowns in the win, his first dual victory inside Hilton Coliseum.
Evan Frost notched his 10th-straight victory with a dominant showing at 133 pounds. He tallied four takedowns against Tyler Chappell before using a half nelson to secure a fall in 4:45 for his second pin of the season.
At 141 pounds, Jacob Frost was workman-like in an 8-2 decision over Briar Priest. His winning streak now mirrors his identical twin brother's streak at 10-consecutive victories.
Paniro Johnson was much the aggressor in his match at 149 pounds against Kade Brown, but Brown's shot defense proved to be stout. Johnson was unable to score the winning takedown until late in sudden victory overtime for a 4-1 decision. The Erie, Pa. native is now 10-0 this season at 149 pounds and has won 13-consecutive matches.
Carter Fousek wrestled tough but could not overcome an early seven-point, feet-to-back takedown by No. 23 Dylan Evans at 157 pounds. Fousek pushed for a late takedown to avoid giving up bonus points but ultimately dropped an 11-3 major decision.
Iowa State led 16-4 after five matches.
Aiden Riggins is settling into the 165-pound weight class nicely and won his second consecutive match with a major decision over Kelin Laffey. Riggins had four takedowns and a reversal in a 14-4 win.
At 174 pounds, No. 21 MJ Gaitan and No. 18 Luca Augustine met for the third time in their collegiate careers. Gaitan, previously 0-2 against Augustine, used a second period takedown get a 4-2 decision over the Pitt Panther.
Iowa State's early success in the dual paid off as the Panthers closed with three-straight wins at 184, 197 and 285 pounds.
