AMES, Iowa – Iowa State Coach Ashley Miles Greig rounded out her coaching staff Monday afternoon, naming five-time NCAA All-American Ragan Smith as assistant coach.
Smith, a renowned gymnast at Oklahoma, comes to Ames after spending one postgraduate year with the Sooners as a student coach. During her time competing for OU, Smith collected four Big 12 individual championships and produced 11 perfect 10.0 scores on balance beam.
"I'm so excited to welcome Ragan Smith to my staff as an assistant coach," said Miles Greig. "As an athlete, she knows firsthand the value of being part of a high-performing, positive team culture, and as a coach, she will inject new energy and enthusiasm into our team. Ragan's commitment to excellence and respect for the sport are truly inspiring and will be a great catalyst in the future success of our program."
During her time in Norman as an athlete, Smith helped bring two championships to Oklahoma (2022 & 2023). While a member of the staff last year as a student coach, she helped bring a third as the Sooners again won the title.
"I'm honored to be part of the Iowa State coaching staff, and it feels like the perfect next step in my journey," said Smith. "Coach Miles Greig's vision and leadership inspire me, and I'm so excited to help shape a culture where athletes can grow, compete with heart, and achieve greatness together. I can't wait to get started and give back to the sport that's given me so much."
Smith earned six WCGA All-American honors, was named the 2020 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, collected eight All-Big 12 recognitions, was Regional Beam Champion twice (2023 & 2024) and excelled in the classroom, earning three Academic All-Big 12 First Team nods. Below are her career highs.
Vault: 9.850 – 2020 vs. Denver
Bars: 9.975 – 2024 vs. Alabama
Beam: 10.000 – 11 times
Floor: 9.975 – five times
All-Around: 39.650 – 2020 at Perfect 10 Challenge
Smith's addition effectively completes the coaching staff for the 2026 campaign, as Coach Miles Greig brought in youth, experience and talent to her staff.
"I'm incredibly excited to welcome these three outstanding coaches to the Cyclone Family,' said Miles Greig. "Jazmyn, Mary, and Ragan each bring a unique set of skills, a shared passion for gymnastics, and a deep understanding of the type of approach it takes to develop student-athletes both in and out of the gym. Rebuilding my staff was an opportunity to reimagine how we can support our team, and I truly believe I've assembled a dynamic, collaborative group that's ready to continue pushing this program forward. Our athletes are going to benefit from diverse perspectives, unmatched energy, and a united commitment to excellence. This is the beginning of a new chapter for Iowa State Gymnastics, and I can't wait to get started."
