HOUSTON, Texas - Iowa State swimming and diving opened day one of the Big 12 Duals on Friday scoring a total of 525 points across the pool and boards, using the opening day of conference competition to gain valuable experience against Big 12 opponents.
"With session one being done and session 2 in the books, we had some solid swims. We're coming off a hard training block while swimming against some really tough opponents in the Big 12 and we have some people stepping up," said head coach Matt Leach.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Iowa State opened the first day of Big 12 Duals with scoring performances across both sessions, beginning in the morning with solid relay and individual swims. The Cyclones placed two relays inside the scoring positions in the 200 medley relay, highlighted by the team of Piper Hagen, Grace Swoboda, Kendall Mallers and Emma Kuhn finishing fifth. Mallers continued the momentum in the 100 butterfly with a top-five finish, while Anja Peck added points in the 400 IM by placing fifth overall.
The breaststroke events continued to be a strength for the Cyclones. In the evening session, Peck delivered a podium performance in the 200 breaststroke, finishing second, while Grace Swoboda followed with a sixth-place finish to give Iowa State two top 10 scorers in the event. Carlotta Gazzola also delivered key points for Iowa State in the evening session, as Carlotta Gazzola placed third in the 500 freestyle.
On the boards, Iowa State produced steady results across both sessions, highlighted by the 1-meter competition in the evening. Kate Mitchell led the Cyclones with a fifth-place finish, while Jade Hazes placed sixth with a score of 265.25 to earn an NCAA Zone qualifying mark. Maggie Bendell added a ninth-place finish, giving Iowa State three divers inside the top 10 to close out day one of the Big 12 Duals.

The Cyclones will return to action on Saturday for the final day of the Big 12 Duals, as Iowa State looks to build on its opening day performances and close out conference competition in Houston.
