- Coached Iowa State to the 1989 and 1994 NCAA Men's Country Championships
- Mentored 104 All-Americans and 156 Big Eight champions in his 23-year career
- A 19-time district Coach of the Year, Bergan led the Cyclones to 25 Big Eight team titles (including five straight in men's cross country)
- Coached 16 Olympians – notably world champion Yobes Ondieki and Olympic silver medalist Danny Harris – from six nations
- Created the vision for the Iowa State Cross Country Course, a two-time site for the NCAA Championship
- Member of the Iowa Track Coaches, USTFCCCA and Drake Relays Halls of Fame
- Iowa State honored Bergan in 2012 by dedicating its new track & field facility as the Bill and Karen Bergan Track at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
