Member of the track & field team in the 1970s when it transitioned from club status to varsity intercollegiate athletics
Under the banner of the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), Iowa State participated in its first national championship in 1974 and Carroll was a member of a title-winning 440-yard relay
An AIAW All-American in four different events at that 1974 national competition
As a prep athlete, Carroll won four state championships (60, 100, 200 and long jump) one season to score all of her school's points
Married four-time U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Al Oerter (discus) in 1982
