OKLAHOMA CITY - Nebraska had little trouble disposing of Iowa State in the Huskers' first game of the Big 12 Softball Tournament in Oklahoma City, 5-1. NU senior Jenny Voss pitched a complete game and allowed just four hits while striking out three Cyclone hitters as her squad won its 14th straight game. Voss also extended her unearned inning streak to 49.
Iowa State got on the board in the top of the first inning when Lisa Frank crossed the plate on an error by Husker cathcer Amber Burgess. Nebraska tied the score in the bottom of the third on a Jennifer Lizama RBI single that plated Kim Ogee. Heather Martin's pinch-hit single drove in Jenifer Williams in the fourth and the Huskers scored another run in the fifth when Lizama came home from third on a Williams bunt. A pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth sealed the win for NU. Lizama, last year's tournament MVP, was 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs. She was the only player with more than one hit in the contest.
The second-seeded Huskers improved to 46-18 on the year while Iowa State, the tournament's No. 10 seed, dropped to 18-28. Erica Martinez, who gave up two runs, both earned, in 3.2 innings of work, took the loss for Iowa State. Her record dipped to 4-6 on the season.
Iowa State plays Texas in an elimination game at 3 p.m. while Nebraska will face Texas Tech at 8 tonight.
