SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Texas Longhorns defeated the Iowa State soccer team 4-1 in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament Thursday. The second-seeded Longhorns topped the seventh-seeded Cyclones in the first round for the second straight year.
Kelly McDonald and Lauren Field led the offensive attack for the Longhorns, accounting for all four Texas goals. McDonald scored in the 13th minute off an assist from Big 12 Player of the Year Kelly Wilson. Field scored the second Longhorn goal in the 24th minute. The Cyclones got on the board with 48 seconds remaining in the first half. Freshman forward Amy Flores scored her third goal of the season, with Erin Weldon notching her second assist in as many games.
Texas grabbed a two-goal advantage 13 minutes into the second half when McDonald scored her 13th goal of the season with an assist from Field. Junior midfielder Field scored the game's final goal in the 77th minute.
The Longhorns outshot the Cyclones 15-12, including an 8-5 edge in the second half. Erin Weldon and Kristina Baumann each had three shots for Iowa State. Baumann's 65 shots in 2002 is the fifth-highest single-season total in ISU history.
Iowa State senior defender Tiffany Belz started her 76th consecutive game. Her 76 starts ranks third on the ISU all-time career starts chart.
The Cyclones finish the season with a 7-11-1 record and a 4-6 mark in Big 12 play, the second-best conference record in program history. Interim head coach Rebecca Hornbacher is the only first-year Iowa State soccer coach to lead the squad to a Big 12 Tournament appearance.
Texas moves on to play Nebraska or Kansas in the second round Friday.
