WACO, Texas - The Iowa State softball team fell 6-4 Sunday afternoon in a hard fought conference battle at No. 22 Baylor in Getterman Stadium. The loss gave ISU a split for the weekend as they downed the nationally ranked Bears 2-0 on Saturday. Lindsey Herrin helped pace ISU as she was one of three Cyclones with two hits, she finished 2-for-3 with a run and all four Cyclone RBI. The loss moves ISU to 15-16 on the year and to 5-6 in Big 12 action. Baylor improves to 41-13 overall and to 8-5 in league play.
Iowa State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Herrin two-out RBI double. Her single plated Erica Martinez who had got on the base paths with a infield single. Baylor tied the score at 1-1 in the third, BU's Nan Wilkins led off with a triple off the centerfield wall and then scored on a wild pitch.
With the score tied 1-1 in the top of the sixth, Herrin struck again, this time blasting a three-run homer to right-center to put the Cyclones up 4-1. Adi Blackmon and Martinez lead off the inning with back-to-back singles and then came home when Herrin registered her eighth home run of the year.
Unfortunately for Cyclone fans the Baylor bats came alive in the bottom of the inning. After managing just one run on six hits in the previous 19 innings, the Lady Bears scored five runs on four hits, two walks, a pair of wild pitches and an ISU error to take a 6-4 lead. ISU then went down in order in the top off the seventh ending the Cyclones chances for the day.
Martinez took the loss to fall to 7-8 on the year. The junior worked 5 1/ 3 innings, allowing five runs to score on five hits while striking out four. Jen Bice came in on relief registering the final two outs of the sixth. Bice gave up one run on two hits.
Iowa State will have just one day off before hosting intrastate rival Iowa on Tuesday. First pitch will be at 4 p.m. at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
