AMES, Iowa - Erica Martinez hit her ninth and 10th home run of the season to lead Iowa State as the Cyclones defeated Western Illinois 6-5 today at the Southwest Athletic Complex. The game was called in the fifth inning due to lightning.
Western Illinois took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Brooke Koehlhoeffer singled and scored on a Shannon Goebel home run. The Cyclones answered back in the bottom of the first inning as Martinez hit her first home run of the day to cut the lead to 2-1. Western Illinois battled back scoring three runs in the top of the second inning. The Western Winds scored three runs on four hits to give Western Illinois a 5-1 lead. ISU answered back scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kelly Wardein doubled to center field and advanced to third on a Kristin Shipley single. A Kim Rodgers sacrifice fly to left field scored Wardein to make it 5-2. Shipley scored on an error by second baseman Jennifer Tyrrell to make it 5-3. Iowa State added one more run in the bottom of the third inning. Katie Ruby singled to center field and scored on a Wardein double to make it 5-4. The Cyclones took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as Martinez hit her second home run of the day to give Iowa State the 6-5 lead.
Martinez recorded the win for the Cyclones allowing no runs on three hits while fanning six. Martinez was 2-of-3 at the plate with three RBI while Wardein was two-of-3 at the plate with two RBI. Shipley had two hits while Lindsey Herrin and Adi Blackmon each contributed a hit. The Cyclones (16-18 overall and 5-7 in the Big 12) return to action on Saturday. ISU plays host to Texas at the Southwest Athletic Complex. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
