AMES, Iowa - On a rare 80-degree October day in Iowa, the Texas soccer team prevailed 1-0 over Iowa State Sunday. The Longhorns (10-6) solidify their position in the upper division of the Big 12 Conference, moving to 5-2 in league play. Iowa State falls to 4-8-3 overall and 1-5-1 in the Big 12.
After a couple of early scoring opportunities for Iowa State, Texas grabbed the offensive momentum, collecting 11 shots to Iowa State's one attempt over the final 40 minutes of the first half. In the 39th minute, Nikki Thaden made good on her third attempt of the half. She collected the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and made a move to the right past an ISU defender. After freeing herself, Thaden lofted a shot over Iowa State goalkeeper Beth Chapman for her fifth goal of the season.
Iowa State's best chance to tie came 20 minutes into the second half when Jess Villhauer hit a low, quick corner quick into the box. Arlene Samuel came forward to collect the ball and fired a shot that went just wide right. Thaden nearly scored again in the 66th minute, but her attempt hit the crossbar after she had broken through the Iowa State defense. Texas was able to control play in the Iowa State end over the last few minutes to preserve its seventh shutout of the season.
Iowa State head coach Rebecca Hornbacher commended her team's defensive effort. "We battled for 90 minutes, and we got good time and contributions from a lot of players," she said. "Erin Weldon played a very solid game and did a great job of organizing in the back. Arlene Samuel played a great game as well."
"Any four players we have in the back are well-organized," Hornbacher said. "Beth Chapman has been playing very solid. We're getting better, and we need to gauge our success from that."
The one-goal contest was the closest between Iowa State and Texas since the Longhorns won 2-1 in Ames in 2000. Texas moves to 9-1 all-time against Iowa State.
For the game, Texas outshot Iowa State 17-7 and attempted 12 corner kicks to Iowa State's three. Kristina Baumann led Iowa State with three shots and surpassed 100 career shots, becoming the eighth player in school history to reach that milestone. Thaden led Texas with five shots. In her 50th career start, Chapman collected four saves.
The Cyclones allowed no second-half goals for the fifth straight game. ISU has collected three second-half goals of its own in that span. Overall, Iowa State has outscored its opponents 11-10 in the second half this season.
Iowa State will make its second trip to the state of Texas next weekend. The Cyclones visit Texas Tech on Friday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m.
