LINCOLN, Neb. - The Iowa State softball team fell, 6-1, to No. 9 Nebraska Wednesday afternoon at Nebraska's Bowlin Stadium. The Cyclones fell to 18-26 on the season and 5-9 in Big 12 play. Freshman Kristen Karanzias started out on the mound for the Cyclones and took the loss, her record falling to 5-9. With the win, Nebraska improves to 33-11 on the season and 9-6 in league play.
Nebraska's Peaches Harris picked up the win on the mound, striking out nine batters and allowing just one hit.
Nebraska got on the scoreboard right away in the first inning by scoring two runs on two hits. NU's Kim Ogee and Lisa Wangler each had singles, while Amanda Bucholz, who reached base on a walk, and Ogee scored to make the score 2-0. The Cornhuskers added two more runs in the second inning to make the score 4-0. NU scored two runs on one hit and one ISU error. The Huskers added one more run in the third and fourth innings to take a 6-0 lead.
Iowa State struggled early on and didn't reach base until the top of the fourth inning when senior Katie Ruby reached base on a walk. The Cyclones got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning when junior Kelly Wardein reached first on a walk. After sophomore Misty Kimura struck out, freshman Cary Akins reached base on an error by Nebraska's shortstop. Wardein scored on the play. The score was 6-1 after six innings.
Iowa State ended the seventh inning with out a run and Nebraska won the game, 6-1. It was it's second win over the Cyclones this season.
ISU got just one hit, an Ashley Core bunt, and one run for the game.
ISU will play host to Texas Tech on Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27 at the Southwest Athletic Complex. Saturday's game starts at noon. The Cyclones will be honoring their six seniors that day.
