NORMAL, Ill. - Iowa State and Illinois State each scored a second half goal in a double-overtime tie in Friday night soccer action. The tie is the second straight draw on the road for the Cyclones. Both squads are now 2-2-2 in 2003.
Iowa State redshirt freshman Kate Kirwan got her team on the board first, scoring her first collegiate goal six minutes into the second half. Kirwan is tied for the team lead with four points this season. The Cyclones held the one-goal edge until just under seven minutes remained in the second half. At the 83:04 mark, Illinois State's Diana Puckett scored her second goal of the season off an assist by Joyce Kleinheinz.
Each team managed just one shot in the two overtime periods, and Iowa State outshot Illinois State 12-9 for the game. Kirwan led Iowa State with four shots and sophomore Deb Benakis added three.
Cyclone goalkeeper Beth Chapman recorded five saves on the day. Redbird goalkeepers Andrea Shaw and Allison Farrington combined for seven saves.
Iowa State is now 1-0-2 on the road this season and extends its road unbeaten streak to three games, the longest such streak for the squad since 1998. The Cyclones also extended their overtime unbeaten streak to six games, dating back to the beginning of the 2002 season. ISU is 3-0-3 in overtime games during that span.
Iowa State returns home to face Mississippi State Sunday, Sept. 21, at 1 p.m.
