AMES, Iowa-- Kristina Baumann scored a goal late in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and freshman Stephanie Kaphingst added her second goal of the season to help Iowa State defeat Oklahoma, 2-1, Friday night in Norman. With the win, ISU improves to 7-7 and 4-2 in Big 12 play. The victory extends the Cyclones' winning streak to four games. Oklahoma falls to 6-5-3 overall and 2-4 in league action. The win was ISU's second road win in a row.
The Cyclones were offensively solid in the first half, outsthooting the Sooners, 7-3. But OU had two corner kicks to ISU's zero. ISU took a 1-0 lead early when junior Amy Flores and senior Erin Weldon found Kaphingst, who headed the ball in the net for the goal. Flores has scored either a goal or an assist in ISU's last four games.
In the second half, the Sooners jumped on board when Allyson Kucera scored her fourth goal of the season in the 87th minute. Oklahoma had 10 second-half shots to ISU's four. OU also managed four corner kicks. The game looked like it was going to go into overtime until Baumann scored just over a minute later.
"Kristina Baumann had a fantastic effort tonight," head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "She did a great job of finishing off her shot and scored when we needed her to."
Baumann led the way with four shots with two of them coming on goal. Kaphingst had two shots on goal. Freshman goaltender Joanna Haig had four saves. Oklahoma's goal in the first half tonight was the first goal Haig has given up in three games.
"This was a great team win for us," Hornbacher said. "They did a great job tonight and they did well adjusting to what Oklahoma came out with tonight. I am very happy with where we are in the season as we continue to get better with each game we play. We'll take this momentum with us into our game with Oklahoma State on Sunday."
The Cyclones will continue their Oklahoma swing when they take on Oklahoma State on Sunday. Game time is set for Noon.
