Cyclone Gymnasts Break Two School Records

CHAMPAGNE, Ill. -- The No. 5 Iowa State gymnastics team continued their winning streak with a victory over Illinois in a dual in Champagne Saturday night (196.100-194.925). ISU's record improves to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big 12.

The Cyclones' performance resulted in the breaking of two school records. The team recorded the highest-ever team vault (49.500) and floor (49.625) scores in school history.

On the vault, freshman Janet Anson claimed first place with a career-high score of 9.975. Her score ranks second in highest-ever scores on vault. In second were sophomore teammates Jessica Oney and Krystal Carney, who scored a 9.925 to mark career highs. Sophomore Erin Dethloff shared fourth-place honors with Illini Danye Botterman (9.875).

On the bars, Dethloff claimed first with a 9.925. Freshman Katie Lasher tied her season-high score of 9.850 to share second place with Illinois' Ashley Williams and Cara Pomeroy.

In competition on the beam, Iowa State senior Chee Chee Calina tied with Aillini KatieWild for third place (9.825). Co-champions in the event were Illinois teammates Ashley Williams and Kara Kapernekas (9.875).

Krystal Carney and Anson helped boost the Cyclones to their record-breaking performance on the floor with career-high scores of 9.95. Dethloff shared third with Kapernekas, 9.925.

Iowa State took second, third and fourth in the all-around competition. In second was Anson (39.075), Dethloff finished third (38.900) and Powell claimed fourth (38.575). Winning the event was Williams (39.225).

ISU will next travel to No. 24 Minnesota to compete against the Golden Gophers at the Sport Pavilion on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m.
