LINCOLN, Neb. - The Iowa State softball team played solid defense allowing just five Nebraska hits and striking out three batters, but couldn't generate its offense and fell, 2-0, to No. 25 Nebraska Wednesday afternoon in Lincoln. The game, which was scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., did not start until 5:30 due to a scheduling conflict with the umpires. With the loss, the Cyclones fall to 12-23 overall and 0-9 in league play.
Nebraska pitcher Ashley DeBuhr pitched a perfect game, allowing no ISU hits and striking out 10 Cyclone batters. Her record improves to 15-12. Alyssa ransom was on the mound for the Cyclones, record falling to 6-14.
The Cornhuskers scored right away in the first inning when second baseman Anne Steffan crossed home plate off an Iowa State error to give Nebraska a 1-0 lead after one. Steffan started off the inning with a single to first base. She was then pushed to second on a sacrifice hit by third baseman Jessica Yoachim.Sheena Lawrick and Jamie Waldecker were both walked to load the bases, bringing up Devin Porter, who reached base on an error, hich scored Steffan.
After three innings of scoreless play, Nebraska scored its second run in the bottom of the fifth inning when centerfielder Trisha Tannahill crossed the plate after designated player Cassie Kleinsmith was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Cyclones have a quick turnaround as they travel to play Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls on Thursday starting at 4 p.m. The Panthers defeated ISU, 5-3, in extra innings back on April 5.
