CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Amie Ford tossed a complete game four-hitter and Iowa State rallied for two runs in the sixth inning to defeat Northern Iowa, 2-1, in non-conference softball action on Wednesday afternoon at Panther Park.
Whitney Perkins walked and scored on a passed ball and Katie Reichling delivered a RBI double to score Ashley Killeen in the sixth inning, giving Iowa State (16-16) an insurmountable 2-1 lead. Killeen, a Papillion, Neb. native, had reached on a single, the 100th hit of her career, earlier in the inning.
Both teams struggled at the plate in the game, combining for just seven hits, four by Northern Iowa (9-23-1) and three by the Cyclones.
Ford settled in after allowing a two-out first inning homer to Jamie Kelling. The sophomore struck out six batters to improve to 10-7 on the season.
Uju Ibekwe (4-10) took the loss for UNI, allowing two runs in five innings in the circle. The Cyclones were able to draw five walks from Ibekwe, including Perkins' leadoff walk to start the rally in the sixth inning. Ibekwe also led the Panthers from the plate, going 2-for-2.
Cary Akins picked up the only other hit for the Cyclones, a single in the seventh. Akins later stole second base.
Iowa State will jump back into Big 12 play with a pair of games at Texas Tech this weekend. First pitch for Saturday's series opener is slated for 2 p.m.
