AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State scored 11 runs without recording an out in the sixth inning to defeat Nebraska, 13-4, and snap the Huskers' streak of 139 straight Big 12 Conference games without being defeated by the run-rule. Texas now holds the longest active streak with 77 straight league games without being run-ruled.
The Cyclones (26-19, 3-6 Big 12) trailed 4-2 heading into the sixth inning but rattled off six hits, drew three walks and a hit by a pitch and had one runner reach on an error in the inning.
Courtney Wray started the inning off with an infield single, beating out a chopper to third base, and Ariel Coburn walked to make it first and second with no outs. After Amanda Bradberry reached on a dropped fly ball by Nebraska left fielder Darcy Rutherford, Sydni Jones singled to right field to score Wray and keep the bases loaded. Alex Johnson then belted her third homer of the season, all of which have been grand slams, to give ISU the 7-4 edge.
The inning continued with Carrie Monroe and Sara Stinson drawing walks before Kristy Olsen loaded the bases by being hit by a pitch. Kelsey Kidwell then lined a double to left center to score Monroe and Stinson and make it 9-4. Courtney Wray's double made it 10-4 and Coburn's second homer of the game ended it at 13-4.
Nebraska (17-21, 1-8) held a 1-0 lead after Julie Brechtel singled to score Crystal Carwile in the fourth inning but the Cyclones bounced back with two in their half of the inning. Kidwell singled to center to lead off the inning and came home on Coburn's first homer of the game off Husker starter Alex Hupp.
The Huskers would bounce right back in the top of the fifth as Carwile took Rachel Zabriskie's first pitch over the wall in left to make it 3-2. Nebraska added another in the sixth on a throwing error by ISU catcher Sara Stinson on a stolen base attempt but the Cyclones would respond in the bottom half of the frame with its biggest inning of the season.
The 13 runs scored by ISU were the most in league play since two years ago to the day when the Cyclones hung 14 on Texas A&M.
Coburn finished with five RBI, going 2-for-3 with two homers. Johnson drove in four runs with one swing of the bat to give her a team-high 29 on the season. Kidwell and Wray also finished with two hits each in the game
Charissa Carlin (10-7) got the win for Cyclones despite equaling her shortest outing of the season. Carlin tossed two-thirds of an inning in relief of Zabriskie but picked up the win as ISU regained the lead after she entered the game. Zabriskie allowed four runs, three of which were earned, in 5.1 innings of work.
Molly Hill (7-11) took the loss for Nebraska in relief, allowing six runs in 1.2 innings of action.
The Cyclones will head to Lincoln Thursday to conclude the season series with the Huskers. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
