AMES, Iowa - Jordon Andreassen finished second in the heptathlon Thursday at the Kansas Relays, compiling 4,552 points in her first heptathlon. The Polk City native started the day off with a fourth place finish in the long jump, clearing 16-5 feet, collecting 559 points. The strong start provided a confidence boost for Andreassen, who sat out the last two weeks with a foot injury.
“It was so important (to get that start),” Andreassen said. “I was a little down on my performance yesterday because I just came back from an injury. I wanted to do well and try to get my confidence back up. I'm happy with everything. I have some improvements to make in these next couple weeks before (Big 12 Conference Championships), but I just have to make it happen.”
Following a personal record throw of 105-8 in the javelin for a third place finish, Andreassen placed third in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:36.05. Andreassen's total of 4,552 points qualified her for competition in the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
“I'm so excited to go to junior nationals,” Andreassen said. “Now that I know I've made it for the heptathlon, I'm just going to work even harder, so I can be in the top two or even first at junior nationals.”
Assistant coach Peter Herber is excited for Andreassen's future as an Iowa State multi-event athlete.
“Jordon is a great person to have to really start our multi-program at Iowa State,” Herber said. “To have someone of her caliber as a freshman is amazing. She's the type of person that we need to really get it started (at Iowa State). She's going to be great not only with the multi-events, but it was great for her to be able to come out and high jump as well as she did.”
Cyclone freshman Mallory Henderson finished ninth in the heptathlon, scoring 3,555 points. Henderson finished second in the javelin with a distance of 107-11. Iowa State freshman Kale Brockman placed 12th in the decathlon with 4,683 points.
Iowa State freshman Christine Fries finished eighth in the 800-meter unseeded run, finishing in a time of 2:19.73. Sophomore Daniel Murray finished 14th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:04.46.
Sophomore Hillary Bor was the lone Cyclone competing on day one of competition at the Mount Sac Relays. Bor finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:43.27.
